So, you see your favorite streamer doing Gridshot on Stream. You download Aimlab as well and now you are playing gridshot for 15 minutes a day. But you barely see any change in your aim training. That’s because you are doing it completely wrong.
There are 6 aiming skills according to Aimlab: Flicking, Tracking, Speed, Precision, Perception and Cognition. Playing gridshot only works on speed and neglects the other 5. Hell, even precision. These are giant balls and you don’t even have to be precise. This, in the long run, might build some bad habits in your aim. So let’s avoid that, shall we?
Follow A Guide
If you take one thing from this article, just read one line. It should be this. You should follow a well-known guide written by a pro player. Making playlists by yourself is a sure way to waste your time. In the best case scenario, it won’t help as much, and in the worst case scenario will form some bad habits. By following a well-known aim routine, you will get more return on your time investment.
I remember, when I started aim training, I just picked some popular routines in Aimlab and started playing. And while I did experience some growth, it wasn’t optimal and I could’ve done way better. Especially, when I only trained a few out of the 6 aiming skills. Neglecting the other skills, stiffened my potential growth and it was way harder to advance through the ranks. Hitting plateaus was a regular thing for me. But after I learned more about aim training and about the community. I started aim training with a good routine.
If you read my other blog posts, you may find that I recommended in some cases, to just go into Aimlab and type your game’s name in the search bar and do something popular. Now, if you are too lazy to follow a guide, it may be okay. And maybe most of the most popular aim training routines there are good and are built by good players. But I find, following a good guide, is better. It caters for your skill level. Every guide uses Kovaak’s for it’s aim trainer (Which is better imo, Kovaaks vs Aimlab). And it’s just way more thorough and trust worthy than a random routine on Aimlab.
Make sure you follow a good through guide written by someone who is credited. I recommend starting with:
- Tammas’ Aim Training Routine Addendum – This guide was written by Aimer7, (credit where credit is due) who is one of the most popular aim “gurus” in the community. He’s an aim coach with one of the best routines, and he’s coached many of today’s pro players on the scene. I, myself follow this guide, and I see improvement day by day. I really recommend you check it out. A very thorough guide that explains everything and goes over the fundementanls. It includes every type of aiming skill, benchmarks, and routines that are catered for your skill level.
- Sparky’s Fundamentals – Another great aim training routine. Sparky started as a small discord group with tips and tricks for various games. But now, they’ve expanded and rebranded themselves as “Voltaic”. They are investing resources and expanding the group beyond the aim community realm. It is a good guide, that many people follow. Like Aimer7’s guide, very thorough, goes over everything, and includes benchmarks.
Which Aim Training Guide Should I Choose?
I’d say it doesn’t really matter. Especially if you are an average player. Everything you do, your body will respond effectively to it. So read a bit, see what you like better, and go for it. I chose the Aimer7’s guide. I was really impressed by the division of the routines. There is a tracking routine, click-timing routine, and a balanced routine for each skill level. But, why do we need that?
Every Game Is Different
Not all games are created equal. Some games are tracking heavy like Apex Legends and Overwatch, while some focus more on click-timing like CS:GO and Valorant. Some require more balanced routines like Warzone, for example. You should identify, the main aim aspect of your game and focus on that. Being a top tracker is great, but won’t help as much in Valorant. And being the best “flicker” on the planet, won’t be as useful in Apex Legends (Of course they are useful, but these games have an emphasis on different types of aiming skills). So make sure you use the correct aim routine for maximum growth. For Warzone, I use the balanced routine. I find it perfect for me.
Choosing a tracking-heavy routine doesn’t mean you abandon click-timing. It just means that it puts more emphasis on tracking. So don’t worry, you will improve every type of aiming skill.
In-Game Tips
When you are practicing click-timing scenarios, you should be as smooth as possible. Try to draw straight lines between the targets, and follow them smoothly.
When you are practicing tracking scenarios, you should never be focused on predicting your target’s movement. Don’t try to figure out its pattern, and adjust your aim accordingly. This is not a good habit. You should prioritize smoothly tracking it and reacting when nessecary. Has the target changed direction? React. Do not predict.
Do not focus too much on scores. This is easier said than done, but don’t focus on them too much. Focus on improving yourself. Focus on doing the task as precisely and smoothly as you can. For example, predicting the target’s movement can give you some extra score, especially in the easier tracking tasks, but will harm you in the long run.
General Tips
So now you have chosen the best aim training routine for you. How to maximize its effect and make sure we get the most out of it?
Sleep
Yep, sleep. Do not underestimate the power of a good sleep. Sleeping and resting after a good practice, will help your brain learn and adapt from the training routine. Sleep will help you learn faster. It will help you feel better and I am sure on the days where you didn’t get a good night’s sleep, you will see the impact in your scores.
Focus
Don’t autopilot while aim training. You are practicing. Make sure you stay focused and you don’t sit on auto-pilot. You should be in the zone 100% of the time. I rarely hear people talk about this and this is one of the most important aspects of aim training. You have to be actively aiming or else you are just wasting your time. How To Improve Your Focus While Gaming.
Consistency
Stay consistent. Training for 15 minutes each day is better than training for 2 hours on the weekend. Stay consistent, practice a little bit every day, and you will see improvement. Consistency is the key to everything in life. Especially aim training.
Conclusion
So, how to aim train effectively and actually improve your aim? First, you should follow a well-known guide like Aimer7’s guide. Then you should choose the focus of your aim training (tracking, click-timing) and stay consistent with it. Get a good night’s sleep as sleep is crucial for developing your aim, and enjoy the process!
Enjoy The Process
This is not a sprint. It is a marathon. Enjoy the process, have fun with it. Share your high scores, tbag some plebs in-game. That’s what keeps us engaged. And with that said, I will see you guys next time.
