As you already know, some games are more tracking-heavy like Overwatch and Apex Legends, while others are more click-timing heavy like CS:GO and Valorant. If you are playing a tracking-heavy game after years of play time in CS:GO, you might find your tracking skills a bit weak in comparison. Today, I am going to go over just that. How to improve your tracking aim in any FPS game.

What Is Tracking?

Tracking is basically glueing your crosshair to your target. It is the skill to maintain your crosshair on your target while it’s moving. We can divide tracking into 2 categories

  1. Smoothness – Basically keeping your crosshair on the target while it moves in one direction. Being smooth and not shaking while you track it.
  2. Reactivity – Flicking to your target after it changes direction.

We will work on each one of them so we can have the best tracking skills as possible.

First Of All - Get Your Settings Right

Sensitivity

Now, before I tell you the exact steps to improve your aim and some tips, you have to nail this one step first. Get your sensitivity right. I have a full guide on The Best Sensitivity. You are probably playing on a very high sensitivity. It is way harder to track objects with that kind of sens. Lowering it will improve your aim and smooth tracking dramatically. How low should you lower it? Well, just copy your favorite pro settings and see how it feels. Play for a bit. Get used to it. Then ask yourself the following questions:

  • Your tracking is too fast and shaky? – Lower your sensitivity .
  • You can’t keep up with the target? – Increase your sensitivity .

You should be able to get to a good, comfortable sensitivity for you, which is on the lower end.

Setup

Does your setup feels comfortable? Is your mouse too heavy? Is it old and rubbish and it doesn’t register your movements correctly? Take a look at your mouse. Does it have what you need to in order to track perfectly? If not, it’s time to get a new one. I can’t recommend enough Logitech G Pro

Is your mousepad clean? Do you even have one? (I hope so). Clean it, make sure it’s not peeling and flaking. Your mat gets dirty overtime, and you may not notice it, but it won’t be as smooth. And you will see your aim degrade. So make sure you clean that and get a high quality one like Logitech G640 Cloth Gaming Mouse Pad.

Do you have a high refresh rate monitor? If not, then you are at a massive disadvantage. Playing at 60Hz monitors today, is a handicap. Upgrading to a high refresh monitor is night and day. Everything feels way smoother, more responsive, and a lot clearer. Tracking will be way easier for you when you see the target smoothly. Your brain can process the information much better. For the best gaming monitor, I recommend BenQ ZOWIE XL2546K

How To Actually Improve Tracking

Aim Trainer

It’s no secret that aim trainers are the bomb if you think about improving your aim. You can work on your weaknesses, really focus on every aiming aspect, and be totally dedicated to tracking your opponents. That’s why I am a huge advocate of aim trainers. In this case, we will use an aim trainer in order to improve our tracking aim.

The most popular Kovaaks tracking scenarios are:

  • Close Rong Strafes Invincible
  • Midrange Long Strafes Invincible
  • Far Long Strafes
  • Vertical Long Strafes Invincible
  • Bounce 180 Tracking Invincible

But, I am a huge advocate of guides. Randomly choosing routines may work, but it won’t be optimal. You may neglect some other parts of your aim while focusing too much on other aspects. Then, you will hit a plateau due to imbalances. You may form some bad habits, or just waste some time. That’s why I recommend Tammas’ Aim Training Routine Addendum.

This guide has a specfic tracking-heavy routine for every skill level. You do some benchmark scenarios, you get your skill level and then you get the tracking-heavy routine that is tailored for your skill level. By following a very well known guide, you will work on every aiming aspect and you can be sure you are doing a good routine and not just improvising. Make sure to stay consistent with the routine and practice every day if you can.

Tracking Tips

There are a few tracking tips that I can give you, so your training will be more beneficial.

Don’t Over-Predict – over-predicting, is when you are focused on predicting the target’s pattern, and learning its movements. This is a big no-no. Think as if that target is going to to the same direction forever. Just focus on glueing your crosshair to the target and tracking it as smoothly as you can.  It will improve your smoothness.

Focus On The Target, Not The Crosshair – Keeping your eye on the target will help you react faster to the target’s movement. Therefore, increasing your reactivity skills.

Relax Your Hand – if you grip your mouse too tightly, or your wrist muscles are too tense, it may cause some shakiness in your aim. Therefore, your smoothness will be hurt. Focus on calming yourself and relaxing your muscles. Take notice of the level of tenseness in your hand, and make sure your hand is relaxed. Let your mouse glide on the mousepad.

General Tips

Stay Calm

staying calm and not getting too anxious in gun-fights will help you track better. It was a no brainer. You are calm and collected. Therefore, you are playing at your best. Make sure you are calm and you are not getting too excited in gun-fights. How to be more calm while gaming.

Focus

Make sure you are focused when you are aiming. Especially tracking. It will improve your reaction time. It improves your tracking smoothness skill. And make you a better gamer overall. It will be easier to maintain your crosshair on the target if you are really focused and immersed in the task. How to improve focus while gaming.

Final Words

In short, you can improve your tracking skills by, lowering your sensitivityutilizing aim trainers and specific tracking scenarios like Close Range Strafes Invincible and Midrange Long Strafes Invincible, and by making sure your hands are relaxed and you are focusing on the target when you play.

Thanks for reading and I hope you all have a great day. Keep playing, keep practicing. Stay consistent and I will see you on the leaderboards.
