Video games have many benefits beyond fun and should not be taken for granted. It is fascinating to see the impacts of an activity that many will consider a waste of time (which I 100% disagree with) and to see the benefits of such activity.
That’s why I took the time to research video games and their skillset development, and I present to you the nine gaming skills that are improved by playing video games.
What Skills Are Improved By Playing Video Games
After reading this article, make sure to check out 9 Skills Every Gamer Should Have: Do This And Dominate.
1. Hand-Eye Coordination
You develop hand-eye coordination during gaming. You are using both your hands and your eyes without looking at your hands. You use your eyes to get information based on what you see on the screen and use your hands to move and aim accordingly.
Because you do this on a daily basis, there is no running away from hand-eye coordination skill development. This is one of these skills that every gamer has mastered.
2. Social Skills
Most competitive games are team-based games. You develop communication and social skills because you can’t play multiplayer video games without proper communication. Competitive gaming forces you to communicate with your team.
Video games force you to collaborate, speak up for yourself, and sometimes even lead your team. I can say that most of my leadership skills are from competitive video games. I love these moments, and my team is losing, but I cheer them up and lead the team to a victory.
3. Focus And Concentration
Competitive games require total concentration to succeed. Playing daily forces your mind to focus on one specific thing for some time, and you develop focus and concentration skills as a result.
Do you remember the last time someone called you or started speaking with you during a gaming session? It didn’t end well for you, didn’t it? Video games require 100% of your presence.

4. Multi-Tasking
Playing competitive games improves your multi-tasking abilities. These games require you to do many things in a matter of seconds. Games are very complicated, and it is impossible not to multi-task during gaming.
You multi-task unconsciously so many times in video games. From running away while looking at your minimap to aiming and strafing (moving) during gun fights. It is like hand-eye coordination. It is something that is improved very fast by playing video games daily.
5. Teamwork
Competitive games develop your teamwork skills because most competitive games are team-based. Without proper teamwork and communication, winning chances are tremendously low. Playing video games forces you to play with your team and practice teamwork skills.
Teamwork is very similar to social skills. Some might argue that teamwork is a part of social skills. But because there is a lot of emphasis on teamwork during competitive gameplay, I thought it deserved its own spot.
6. Critical Thinking
Gaming improves your critical thinking due to the many challenges you face in a single gaming session. Gaming requires you to analyze and understand many things during short periods and draw conclusions. It forces you to use your critical thinking abilities.
Critical thinking should not be taken for granted. You make so many decisions based on your game sense that you develop that sharp critical thinking. This is especially true in high-level competitive games.
7. Problem-Solving Skills
Gaming develops your problem-solving skills due to the many challenges that today’s video games offer. Players constantly face numerous obstacles and tests during their gameplay, forcing them to use their problem-solving skills.
I am not even talking about single-player. As a competitive gamer, I can even say that every competitive game has many problems to solve every round. How to run away? How to approach this site? And much more.
8. Decision Making
Gaming develops your decision-making skills because video games force you to make quick decisions on a daily basis. It is even more apparent in competitive games where every second counts, and it is essential to make quick decisions and draw rapid conclusions.
It is similar to problem-solving and critical thinking. Gaming just throws you many challenges and forces you to quickly make your decision.
9. Attention To Detail
Gaming develops your attention to detail because video games force you to analyze every little detail to win. Whether it is in Single player games, puzzle games, or even competitive games. You have to have excellent attention to detail.
It can be found in the small details (no pun intended). For example, running in Warzone while suddenly seeing “bushes” move in the distance. You automatically scope in and shoot. But of course, it is more apparent in single-player games with many puzzles and scenarios to solve.
Does Gaming Improve Anything?
Gaming improves your hand-eye coordination, focus and concentration abilities, and problem-solving skills, and in multiplayer games, it improves your teamwork and social skills. Gaming can also improve your muscle control, perception, and memory.
Do Video Games Maker You Smarter?
Video games have many benefits from improving your focus and concentration abilities, problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and, in-some cases, enhancing your communication and social skills. Gaming can also improve your muscle control, perception, and memory.
